biovolatil

Increasing the energy-related resilience of municipalities through autonomous, climate-neutral energy generation and energy storage

Energy from sun and wind is variable, and so is energy demand. A local balancing solution, extendable by biomass gasifiers with combined heat and power plants and geothermal systems, can compensate for fluctuations and relieve the grids. The joint project "biovolatil" focuses on autonomous, climate-neutral energy generation and storage – integrated into existing systems.

In the example municipalities Oberhausen (urban) and Zittau (rural) we first analyze biomass potentials, geothermal prerequisites and energy data. Based on this, we optimize the energy systems. By comparing the results with previous data, we aim to demonstrate greenhouse gas savings, increased autonomy to boost resilience, and economic viability.

  • Evaluation of different gasifier types
  • Optimization of a commercial biomass gasifier with combined heat and power plant in operation
  • Demonstration of the potentials of medium-depth geothermal energy
  • Development of models based on real data
  • Scenario development for transferability
